Summer is here and our thoughts turn to sun-drenched escapes. But beware. Sun, salt and chlorine can play havoc with hair colour and condition. Louise at our Brook Street salon advises "Prevention is better than cure when it comes to sun damage. Here are my top tips to prevent sun-stressed tresses..."
- Pamper your locks with a pre-holiday deep conditioning treatment to boost moisture levels. Treat yourself to an in-salon treatment or use Paul Mitchell's Super-Charged Moisturizer at home in the weeks leading up to your trip. This ultra rich super moisturising treat gives extra conditioning, deep moisture and greatly improves elasticity leaving your hair looking healthier and stronger.
- UV rays break down the protein in your hair leaving it frizzy and brittle so always protect your hair and scalp. Use a sun product with a high SPF such as Daily UV Protector from the Swim and Sun collection. Use before and after exposure to harmful pool chemicals, seawater and harsh environmental factors. Its exclusive KB2™ healing action helps hair colour remain truer, longer.
- Wear a hat or a scarf where you can is the very best advice I can give you.
- The heavy metals in chlorinated water can turn hair, especially blondes, brassy with a greenish hue. A really useful tip is to rinse your hair thoroughly with clean water before your swim as wet hair soaks up less chlorine than dry. If you're not near a shower my tip is to take a bottle of water with you to the beach.
- Cleanse your hair immediately after your swim using a shampoo specially formulated to remove chlorine such as L'anza's Daily Chelating Shampoo to avoid discolouration by chlorine. This extra gentle shampoo is sulphate free and perfect for hair that has been over-exposed to daily UV rays, heat and chemicals.
- If you can't immediately shampoo your hair then thoroughly rinse hair with fresh water. Always remember to re-apply your protection.
- In the evening, wash with a gentle shampoo and follow with Daily Hydrating Conditioner from the Swim and Sun range by L'anza. This restores vital moisture lost from exposure to UV rays, heat and pool chemicals and creates soft, radiant, shiny locks.
- If you're travelling light the L'anza Swim and Sun travel pack is indispensable. It's a bargain at only £6.95 for these three holiday essentials.
